Constantin Dumitriu - Lattice 2026
Constantin Dumitriu Lattice-Braced Concert Guitar – Cedar / Indian Rosewood
Discover the power, warmth, and projection of this exceptional lattice-braced concert guitar by Romanian master luthier Constantin Dumitriu. Inspired by the famous lattice design concept introduced by Greg Smallman, this instrument delivers remarkable volume and clarity while maintaining a rich, natural tonal character.
Constantin Dumitriu has taken the Smallman concept and refined it with his own innovations, creating a guitar that combines modern projection with the warmth and responsiveness of traditional classical guitars.
Unlike many lattice guitars that can sometimes produce a “boxy” bass response, this instrument offers deep, clear basses, singing trebles, and an exceptionally balanced voice across the entire range. The result is a powerful yet musical sound that responds beautifully to both delicate phrasing and strong concert playing.
The Luthier
Constantin Dumitriu is one of Romania’s most respected contemporary guitar makers. With decades of experience studying and analyzing some of the world’s greatest classical guitars, he combines traditional craftsmanship with modern acoustic research.
His work focuses on achieving a natural, warm sound with exceptional dynamic range and projection, making his guitars highly appreciated by professional performers. Due to growing international demand, his instruments currently have a waiting list of approximately 14 months.
Innovative Construction
While this guitar is inspired by the lattice-braced philosophy, Dumitriu introduces several important refinements that shape its distinctive tonal character.
Solid Wood Back
Unlike many lattice guitars that use laminated backs for structural rigidity, Dumitriu builds the back from solid wood, which contributes to a more organic, woody tone and richer overtone complexity.
Dominique Field–Style Side Bracing
The sides of the guitar are reinforced using a method inspired by Dominique Field. This technique increases structural stability and helps improve projection, sustain, and tonal focus.
Reflector System
A carefully designed internal reflector helps direct the sound more efficiently toward the soundhole and soundport, resulting in immediate projection and impressive volume, ideal for concert performance.
Tone & Playing Experience
This instrument stands out for its exceptional responsiveness and effortless playability.
The cedar top provides warmth, depth, and quick response, while the Indian rosewood back and sides add richness and clarity. Together with the lattice bracing system, this produces a guitar that is:
-
Loud and highly projecting
-
Warm and natural in tone
-
Clear and balanced across all registers
-
Extremely responsive to dynamic changes
The elevated fingerboard allows for comfortable access to the upper positions, making the guitar particularly suitable for advanced repertoire.
